          • Natural Gas - the cleanest hydrocarbon
Natural Gas - the cleanest hydrocarbon
Natural gas – the cleanest-burning hydrocarbon – has a major role to play in the UK’s energy future. It will be vital to building a sustainable energy source, especially in power generation, where it produces around half the CO2 and just one-tenth the air pollutants that coal does. Furthermore, domestic natural gas has a significantly lower (~50%) carbon footprint than imported LNG. With 80% of gas forecast to be imported by 2030, increasingly from LNG, the development of domestic gas has material environmental benefits. With increasing intermittent renewable capacity and penetration, there will be an increased demand for flexible backup power generation and long duration energy storage. Natural gas will have a critical role to play in this regard, supporting and making the energy systems of the future resilient and reliable.
